Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short, is the strategy that allows for the continuous optimization of a website in order to rank in the organic, unpaid results pages of search engines (SERP). The term SERP, which stands for Search Engine Results Pages, refers to the page that contains the ordered list of web pages that a user receives when searching for a word on Google, for example.
In a highly competitive world, like the one we find ourselves in today, to be found by potential customers and thus maximize sales and profit, it is essential to invest in this tactic. In fact, when a question is posed to the search engine, only the top results that appear are considered, and users rarely look at the second page. Therefore, most of the traffic is received by links to websites that are in the top positions. In the digital marketing industry, it is often said that if you do not appear on the first page, it is almost as if you do not exist for users, who do not want to put in too much effort to answer their questions and needs.
Optimizing a website from an SEO perspective means working on technical aspects that allow the site to be easily understood by search engine crawlers. In simpler terms, it means telling Google, or others like Bing, what your website is about, what questions it answers, how it could be useful for a potential user, and so on. Google uses over 200 ranking signals in its algorithm to determine whether a site is "good" or not, and whether it should be rewarded by appearing in the top results.
That said, SEO can be divided into four main subcategories: on-page SEO, off-page SEO, technical SEO, and User Interaction Signals.
