Europe lags behind other global powers, such as the United States and China, in the development and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). This gap can be attributed to several key factors:

  • Insufficient Investment: European investment in AI is lower than in other regions. For example, Italy invests less in AI than other European countries, with France leading investment on the continent.
  • Stringent Regulations: European regulations, such as the Digital Markets Act, aim to promote competition and protect consumers, but they have also created uncertainties that slow the implementation of new technologies. This has led companies such as Apple, Meta, and Google to delay the launch of their AI services in Europe.
  • Limited Technological Infrastructure: The lack of adequate infrastructure, such as advanced data centers and high-speed networks, hinders research and development in the field of AI. In addition, the fragmentation of the European digital market limits the scalability of innovations.
  • Digital Skills Shortage: Europe, and Italy in particular, suffers from a shortage of digital skills needed to develop and implement AI solutions, which limits the ability to innovate in the field.
  • Regulatory Delays: Adoption of AI-specific regulations in Europe has been slower than in other nations, creating uncertainties that hold back innovation and adoption of new technologies.

To close this gap, it is essential that Europe increase investment in the sector, develop appropriate technology infrastructure, promote digital skills, and adopt a balanced regulatory approach that fosters innovation while ensuring consumer protection.
