To share and receive files with our clients, we can use proprietary systems and many open-source solutions from FTP servers to cloud services, to be installed on our own hosting service. This approach has undeniable advantages but requires a greater investment and expertise. And above all, we will need to keep the PC, Server, or NAS on and connected 24 hours a day, resulting in energy consumption.
For home use, we can also use FileZilla Server, free software to install on your own PC to create an FTP server very easily.
A very interesting project is NextCloud
This is an open-source solution for creating a collaborative platform for building a private cloud. We can either install it on our company server or purchase a pre-packaged solution from many web farms. For home and business use, we can also use a NAS (network-attached storage), with excellent solutions from QNAP System, thanks to the Hybrid Backup Sync option, which allows for a high level of data security.
The first system I integrated into the company was FreeNAS (now TrueNAS), an open-source operating system based on FreeBSD that allows for building effective NAS even by recycling old servers. TrueNAS is now a very solid platform with applications in Mission-Critical Storage for large companies.
The weak point of this approach is:
- Cost of hardware and its obsolescence.
- Need for broadband connections with sufficient UPLOAD speed.
- Need for system administration skills for maintenance and upkeep of the systems.
- Energy consumption of devices: a small NAS can consume 20w/hour, a small server can consume more than 100w/hour.
- Need for professional use of UPS and generators to cope with power supply interruptions.
- Security: being located in the company, they require dedicated and adequate spaces, as also required by GDPR.
For most professionals and companies, it is therefore more economical, secure, and simple to use a cloud service.
