Dropshipping is a widely used sales system for selling and trading products online.

Generally, those who intend to start a business with a low capital investment place the management of logistics on their suppliers, thereby reducing warehouse and shipping costs. Essentially, the product purchased by the end user will, instead of going through the retailer, ship directly from the supplier's location, thus partially reducing shipping costs.

But let's take a closer look at how dropshipping works.

How does dropshipping work exactly?

First of all, it should be said that the dropshipping system is applicable to e-commerce sales methods, and therefore, it is not compatible with the traditional sales system, that is, physical stores that sell retail, which must always have the goods requested by customers available and ready for delivery.

With dropshipping, it is understood that a product is resold that must be ordered: the end customer wants to purchase an item, enters the seller's website, and orders it; the seller then requests it from their supplier, who will ship the order directly to the end customer's address, without the product passing through the seller's store.

The seller who applies this sales method gains a significant advantage, as they do not have to own a storage warehouse for the products handled by their store and the related management costs, not to mention that this way they do not run the risk related to unsold inventory.

In summary, the products sold are not actually owned by the seller but are offered to end users, thus the merchant becomes the intermediary between the customer and the supplier.

To ensure that this system works without any problems, it is important that there are solid commercial agreements between the seller and the supplier, in order to guarantee mutual benefits for both parties.

What are the costs incurred by someone running an e-commerce business?

The costs for opening an online store using the dropshipping method are quite low; some are consistently supported even by those who do not manage an online product store, while others are specific to this activity. Below, we will briefly list the main expenses that the owner of an e-commerce site must face.

Internet domain

Just like physical stores, an online store also needs a showcase: for the former, it is a location situated on a street in the city, while for the latter, we are talking about a web page. To open an online store, it is essential to have a domain (web address) that directs users to the store's web page.

Creation of the showcase

The products that will be sold through a webpage are not enough on their own to attract customers; therefore, it is advisable to set up the display in such a way as to attract as many customers as possible.

Just like in a physical store, if the display is well organized and arranged, customers will be more encouraged to visit the inside of the store.

The same applies to an e-commerce site, which should be built by industry professionals.

PrestaShop and Dropshipping

PrestaShop proves to be a very valid solution for dropshipping sales activities, the high scalability of the CMS allows it to adapt to every need both as suppliers and retailers.

The market

What are customers looking for and what does the market offer? These two questions must have precise answers, as it is only through careful market analysis that a successful e-commerce can be achieved.

This means that it may be necessary to consult a professional who can guide the retailer towards the right products and suppliers.

Marketing

Advertising, or marketing campaigns, are important for online stores as well, especially because there are countless retailers of the same items online. A well-crafted and interesting marketing campaign allows you to reach many potential customers, individuals who were unaware of the existence of such a site or who, for various reasons, were not motivated to visit the site. Therefore, a marketing campaign carried out by professionals could improve the site's visibility.

Advantages of dropshipping

The first advantage of applying the dropshipping system is related to the initial capital and future costs to be incurred for opening and managing an online business.

An e-commerce can indeed be structured with a low-cost system mainly due to the computerization of the buying-selling network.

This sales methodology is recognized even at an international level and is used by some of the largest online sales platforms.

The main advantage is, as is evident, especially the minimal costs to be incurred for opening the virtual store, including those related to setting up the website, the e-commerce showcase of the virtual store.

No expenditure will be required for managing inventory, as it will not exist, since the main retailer will utilize the supplier's inventory with which they will sign a commercial agreement, within which it will be agreed that the latter will be paid only after the sale of the ordered product.

Through this method, therefore, those who intend to start an e-commerce business will not risk going into debt due to advance payments for pre-ordered goods, nor will they have to manage unsold products.

In any case, the advantage is not only economic but also time-related.

Those managing a store, in addition to collecting and fulfilling orders, must also deal with logistics and inventory updates.

With the dropshipping system, the activities that the seller will have to perform will mainly concern order management, without having to handle the shipping of items to the customer's home.

The main seller will pass on the packaging and shipping operations of the goods ordered to the supplier. In this way, it will be the supplier who will have to bear the management of shipping the product directly to the customer's home and updating the loading and unloading of items from the warehouse, as well as keeping the inventory book always updated.

This is why the role of the main seller is shifted to an intermediary activity between the demand of the end customer and the offer proposed by the supplier.

For the seller (owner of the e-commerce), the peculiarity of this sales system, in addition to the low economic risk, is the ability to expand their customer base worldwide; in addition to having customers all over the world, the retailer can choose which suppliers to approach for purchasing the products sold through their e-commerce site.

Another advantage in managing an online sales site is related to tax management, which does not require the issuance of fiscal receipts.

The benefits do not only concern retailers, that is, those who manage online stores, but also suppliers who, through the signing of commercial agreements, in addition to having guaranteed customers, can leverage the sales system of others to promote their brand for free.

In fact, the main seller, acting as an intermediary, will have as their main objective the sale of the products handled; consequently, they will need to adopt marketing campaigns that encourage the end customer to purchase a specific product, which in turn will give visibility to the producer and supplier of that item.

But that's not all.

The end customer will also benefit from the dropshipping sales system as they will have the opportunity to search for their product among the many items that the seller will have carefully selected from the various offers available in the market at that precise moment, thus placing them in a position where they do not have to conduct independent, tedious, and prolonged searches for the best product.

Disadvantages of dropshipping

As is normal, in the various situations that life brings us to experience, there are also disadvantages: let's see what those related to dropshipping might be.

The first difficulty that can be encountered during the e-commerce activity developed with the dropshipping method is related to identifying suppliers who can be considered reliable, both in terms of the quality of their products and in terms of professional seriousness, in order to avoid finding oneself with orders managed incorrectly and not punctually, thus risking to market and advertise products that do not offer the qualities they actually possess.

Delivery times, the supplier must guarantee fast delivery times; today, customers will not wait dozens of days to receive the ordered products, as they are accustomed to receiving goods as soon as the next day after the order. The care and shipping times are the first problems encountered even in traditional e-commerce that fail to stand out.

If you are thinking of receiving prepaid orders and then sourcing from China with a single order, or something similar, desist; not only is it prohibited by the consumer code*, but today there is also Alibaba and AliExpress.

*) provided that it is communicated clearly, but you wouldn't sell anything.

Product availability, the supplier must have large quantities of the products you are reselling in stock; it will be difficult for you to have synchronization of quantities almost in real-time; in most cases, you will be able to synchronize this data once a day. To avoid damaging your reputation, it is important to minimize the chances of a customer ordering an unavailable product, and if it happens, to be quick in refunding or proposing an alternative solution.

Withdrawal policy and conformity defects, this is a point to clarify immediately with the supplier: what happens if your customer decides to exercise these rights? Your relationship with the supplier is B2B, thus lacking these protections, so contractually you must have the possibility to return the products that customers return by exercising the right of withdrawal.

SEO problems: it is not easy to stand out without investments in marketing; the price list that is uploaded in most cases is provided by the supplier, which translates into identical product names and descriptions to thousands of other sellers; consequently, we cannot rely on SEO indexing by search engines.

Provided that the product listings are not done manually or curated manually by inserting original descriptions, for Google we will just be one of many duplicate pages, unworthy of presence in the SERP.

Another disadvantage, if it can be defined as such, is the negligible profit, at least initially.

Although management costs are not high, profits initially appear rather low; to explain why, it is good to provide a small example.

If customer X requests a certain product from seller Y, this is ordered from supplier Z, who will ship the item directly to X's address.

X (customer) will pay Y (seller) the amount corresponding to the price of the ordered item; from this amount, Y (seller) will have to deduct the cost of the service provided by Z (supplier).

This means that seller Y will only keep the difference between the selling price (to customer X) and the purchase price (through supplier Z).

So, if the product purchased by X costs 100 euros and Y (seller) bought it, in turn, from (Z) for 80 euros, the seller will only have 20 euros left in cash.

From these 20 euros, seller Y will then have to cover additional management costs: electricity for the operation of the devices used to carry out the e-commerce activity; payment of the fee related to the website, etc.

This means that for managing an e-commerce site, even if the costs are really low, one must engage in marketing activities so that the number of customers relying on that site is always higher, thus allowing for the economic coverage of all expenses, albeit minimal, for the optimal conduct of the activity.

In conclusion, the further negative aspect that can arise from the dropshipping system is related to cyber fraud.

It is not impossible for malicious individuals, posing as sellers, to withhold the payment made by a well-meaning customer, who will never see their order fulfilled.

A few years ago, when the internet was not yet widely used for purchases, some individuals posed as resellers offering products at truly competitive prices, thus attracting several unsuspecting customers into their net, who believed they were saving on the purchase of a product offered at a low cost due to the absence of the typical costs that burden physical stores.

The unsuspecting customers would order the chosen item, advancing a sum of money, for a product that would never be ordered, and thus would never arrive at the user's address.

Thus, the fake seller retained the amount paid by the customer without ever forwarding what the customer had ordered.

Reliability and dropshipper

Internet is a wonderful tool capable of providing a solution for every doubt that the user has.

On the web, it is possible to find, within online communities, lists of dropshippers accompanied by reviews, which compare the different e-commerce sites that operate through this system.

Although there is no official registry of dropshippers, thanks to the reviews left by users, it is possible to avoid unreliable resellers who are unable to meet users' requests.
