Tecnoacquisti® has created the website for the Gemmological Training Centre of Dr. Francesca Fortunato. If you are looking for professionals in the field of jewelry and precious stones, the Gemmological Training Centre (GTC), located in the heart of Rome, is the premier training center for all types of gemology: natural, synthetic, simulant, organic materials, and advanced laboratory analysis (Raman, UV-Vis, FTIR, ED-XRF). Additionally, there are frequent preparatory and specialized courses to learn about the appraisal and expertise of jewelry.

The center is run and founded by Dr. Francesca Fortunato, a lecturer since 2006 at the Italian Periti College and later at IGI Antwerp, where she obtained her Professional Training at the IGI gemological schools (Istituto Gemmologico Italiano), GIAgg, Gem-A FGA, HRD, FEEG, IGI (International Gemological Institute), and specialized in the selection of rough diamonds in Central Africa, collaborating with important foreign companies.

Her cultural and professional background has been transformed into the ability to forge and transmit knowledge of the gemological sector through innovative and cutting-edge teaching methods, standing out as a person and a professional.

The courses of the GTC

At the facility, it is possible to attend six different courses, each lasting five days, where one can learn all the dogmas of gemology and subsequently apply what has been learned in practice. These are courses for practice, repetition, and recovery for gemologists and aspiring gemologists.

After a few years, even specialist gemologists may have gaps in certain areas; in this case, practical days on materials that are not easily available can be useful, such as complex synthetic or treated materials, or simply materials that have just entered the market. It becomes essential to regain confidence and peace of mind in the profession, so as to work serenely and with adequate skills.
Let’s take a closer look at the types of courses:

Gemological Courses: These concern both those who are in the initial learning phase of the subject and professionals eager to refine their knowledge in the field. These types of courses allow the student to progress gradually, starting from preparatory courses up to advanced and specialized courses. Knowledge of diamonds and colored stones is one of the basic components for competently facing various professions in the sector such as jeweler, goldsmith, wholesaler, jewelry appraiser, evaluator, buyer, and seller.

1 Day Advanced Gemological Program Courses: These are one-day courses (from 9 AM to 1 PM and from 2 PM to 6 PM) on specific predetermined topics. The goal is to address the topic in a vertical and in-depth manner, applying what has been learned directly to the material. Participants will have access to a complete workstation with a microscope, samples to analyze, and the opportunity to study new materials that the technological/scientific market offers and that the facility updates every six months. The course topics are varied: advanced level analysis; paraiba tourmaline; jade; synthetic diamond; amber theory and practice; cameo; jasper and agate theory and practice; opal; Japanese sword; ivory; sacred and profane; and a study on coral.

1WEEK Courses: these are specialization courses in gemological practice and recovery lasting one week, specifically from Monday to Friday. Designed for those who want to update themselves on new treatments, new synthetics, and simulating materials. To refresh practice and visual memory of all gemological materials or to delve deeper into topics already covered. To maximize the experience, the GTC has samples of gemological syntheses from the jewelry manufacturing industry.
Among the available courses, we find one related to pearls (theory and practice); exercises for colored stones; advanced emerald course; qualitative analysis of colored stones; advanced course on rough colored stones; history of jewelry; small diamonds; natural and synthetic gems; in-depth study regarding the origin of corundums and beryls, synthetic diamond simulation course, and diamond exercise course.

Courses for Experts: to qualify for the profession of expert and appraiser, the center allows for greater specialization through two distinct branches. In the appraisal and expertise education program, the student encompasses various sectors such as decorative arts, history of jewelry, fashion, antiques, goldsmithing construction techniques, principles of gemology, knowledge of syntheses and treatments on stones, chemical, legal, economic aspects, production of counterfeits, markings, stamps, and much more.
On the other hand, the path for appraisers has been designed for a complete and gradual preparation that requires prerequisites, but after an interview, it is possible to access the courses individually. The courses related to this program cover art nouveau and art deco, Sicilian jewelry, antique jewelry, Cartier day, culture and craftsmanship, Bulgari day, 20th-century jewelry, jewelry from the regions of Italy, and many more. All the courses mentioned above entitle the participant to receive a certificate of attendance; the entire program, however, provides for a diploma certificate.

4 Mondays: this is a gemological training path for industry operators, designed to accommodate the schedules and commitments of sector workers by creating courses compatible with their working hours; there are six topics to choose from, each topic will be covered for four consecutive Mondays. A new project that will include: Diamond - Ruby - Sapphire - Emerald - Treatments on Gems - Hard Stones and Organic Materials.

Finally, exclusive training programs are also available for sales staff, commercial agents, and commercial promoters, as well as for goldsmiths who want to embark on a designer path to then propose themselves in the jewelry, goldsmithing, silverware, and watchmaking market.

Who are the courses at the Gemmological Training Centre aimed at?

  • To workers who need to expand their knowledge and increase their professionalism and competence.
  • To students who are unable to pass or complete their training in gemology at other institutions or who, once finished, still do not feel ready.
  • To students and workers who wish to complete or gain more confidence and certainty in their work as Gemologists and Experts.

The courses will have durations and schedules tailored to the individual needs of each student. It is also possible to recover individual topics (e.g., only synthetics or treatments, or to gain practical experience).
The Gemmological Training Centre, with its twenty years of experience and its team, works every day to improve its teaching methods and provide professional training that meets market needs: a course that combines theory, practice, and the experience of industry specialists.
The GTC also offers courses with special hours for those with work commitments; finally, the center is also a partner of the Lazio Region to offer courses dedicated to self-employed workers and artisans in need of expanding their knowledge. These courses will have recognition in educational credits for universities.

The service of appraisal, expertise, and consulting.

The Gemmological Training Centre is able to recognize, analyze, and classify any type of gemological material, whether organic, natural, or synthetic, and to verify the presence of treatments (thermodiffusion, filling of cracks, heating, irradiation, dyeing, etc.), thanks to the preparation, experience, and seriousness of its collaborators and the equipment available in its laboratory.
Estimates, appraisals, and evaluations are carried out on: antique and modern silverware, antique and modern jewelry, precious stones, and organic gemological material. Finally, also on natural, synthetic, and organic gemological material.

The Gemmological Training Centre is therefore a specialized course covering all aspects of the gemological and appraisal-evaluation sector. The high professionalism of the specialists involved indicates a high level of specialization in the field, and the educational offerings of the courses are broad and dynamic, allowing anyone to attend the courses at the most convenient times, starting from both basic and intermediate knowledge in the gemological sector.
